My Love/Hate Relationship

In case you hadn't already figured it out, I'm a Habs fan. It's kinda weird, because I love the team, but I hate Habs fans. They're obnoxious, rude, they love to hate their team, they'll turn on their own in an instant and turn on you as a non-fan even quicker. And now, some douche has sunk to a new low. Check out this post. The guy is blaming players for shit that hasn't even happened yet. He's expecting a bad season and pinning the blame before the pre-season even starts.

I'd almost rather be a fan of the Leafs who think anyone with a leaf on their jersey is the greatest player in the world and they always have a chance to win the cup. Ignorance is bliss they say.

Yeah, I'm a Leaf's fan. I don't think I'm quite delusional about it... but I was brainwashed as a child. They're my team. And with Blake around, they've got a better chance... but I don't think it'll be this year, or even next. Which gives them plenty of time to bungle things up...

Aaaaanyway, point being, I lost a lot of respect for Habs fans when I watched a couple of games back in 2000. One of the Habs guys got a penalty. The other team (I think it was Chicago) scored during their PP. When that Habs player came back on the ice, they boo'ed him. Like... wtf?

So, it was at that point I ensured I cheered against the Habs. Well, not so much against the team, but against those fans that would do that. Those "fans" don't deserve seeing their team win. Fans are support their team... and the biggest fans support their team, even when they suck.

The ONLY good things Habs fans in the city have is that normally when the team starts under performing, the stop going. And not in a "We only root for a winner" way, but in a "If you don't care enough to put a good team out there, you don't get our money". Or at least, it used to be that way.

I'm trying to find a middle way here in Toronto: How to love a losing team while still being realistic about them. Sorta like how to take the loyalty of Cubs and Pale Sox fans but not be a twerp like Leafs and...well...Cubs fans are. It's tough. It's like you have to create a dichotomy in your mind: love the team, hate the fan.

Or as you like to say "It's not the band I hate, it's their fans."
